Esri software products are grouped into three license types: Single Use, Concurrent Use and Server. Each license type is designed to support a specific category of end users. Details are provided concerning the recommended use for each type, how to obtain each type of license and how to authorize software using an obtained license.

Single Use ButtonSingle Use License
A single use license is assigned to a specific computer. A single use license is required to work offline or disconnected from the State network, known as the Statewide Government Intranet (SwGI). The Maryland GIS Software Master Contract provides users with access to single use licenses for ArcGIS Desktop, Desktop extensions and ArcGIS Engine. For computers remaining connected to the State network, a concurrent use license should be used.

Concurrent Use ButtonConcurrent Use License
A concurrent use license accesses a centralized license manager to authorize software and extensions on demand. Licenses are available to any computers on the State network, known as the Statewide Government Intranet (SwGI). Computers using this type of license must remain connected to the network to ensure that the licenses will remain available. For offline work, a single use license is necessary.

Server ButtonServer License
A server license is specific to the ArcGIS Server software product. ArcGIS Server allows for the creation of web services, which can be shared via the internet. ArcGIS Server is designed to be implemented across an enterprise system. There are multiple levels of server licenses available to complement varying implementation requirements. Server licenses are assigned based on instances of ArcGIS Server to be run on an agency's infrastructure.
