Online Course - Thinking Spatially

This online course is similar in content to the instructor-led course Thinking Spatially. This course will make use of Maryland data and the MD iMAP system, as well as, Maryland Open Data sites Socrata and Esri's GIS Data Catalog for Maryland.

This online course is designed to lead users through four lessons that focus on the main elements of GIS, the MD iMAP Program and ArcGIS Online. The course requires an ArcGIS Online account to complete. The course is designed for Maryland State employees, thus an account with Maryland's ArcGIS Online Organization will be requested. However, any ArcGIS Online account can be substituted. Accounts for ArcGIS Online for Maryland are available to state employees of eligible Maryland State agencies or contractors doing work on behalf of those state agencies. If you are an eligible user and need an account, please fill out and submit the ArcGIS Online for Maryland Account Request form.

Course Description:
This course is intended for those individuals with little or no knowledge of GIS, the MD iMAP Program, or ArcGIS Online. This is a half day course.
  • Learn fundamental concepts of Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Map tabular data and perform basic analysis with ArcGIS Online
  • Convert tabular data to spatial data
  • Use the MD iMAP Composite Geo-Locator​
  • Search for, create and share content

  • Thinking Spatially - This lesson explains what spatial thinking is and how it is useful. It also discusses integrating spatial thinking into the workplace.

    GIS Fundamentals - This lesson reviews basic GIS concepts and fundamentals. You will learn to conduct basic navigation and data exploration tasks in a GIS environment.

    Got Data? Let's Map It - This lesson teaches you how to convert tabular data to spatial data and operate the MD iMAP Composite Locator. It also examines tabular data for its usefulness before converting it to spatial data.

    Got a Map? Let's Analyze It - This lesson examines MD iMAP resources to show you how to access them. You will use ArcGIS Online to search for, create and share content. You will add data from MD iMAP to ArcGIS Online and perform a spatial join.
